Branding Budget for Startups in India (2026): How Much to Spend & Where It Goes
How much should a startup spend on branding in India? 2026 branding budget ranges in ₹, allocation by stage, the 60:40 rule, hidden costs and a template.

Quick answer: Most Indian startups should budget ₹3–10 lakh for a professional brand identity (strategy, logo system, guidelines and core assets) from a full-service agency, ₹50,000–₹2 lakh if they go the freelancer route pre-revenue, and ₹10–30 lakh+ for a full rebrand with packaging and a new website at scale. Beyond the one-time project, plan an ongoing brand + marketing budget: research by Les Binet and Peter Field suggests roughly 60% brand-building / 40% activation for consumer brands and about 46% / 54% for B2B. At Life Designer, branding projects start at ₹3 lakh.

"What should we budget for branding?" is a question founders usually ask after they've already received a few quotes, and the quotes don't agree. One designer offers a logo for ₹25,000. An agency proposes ₹6 lakh. Both are describing "branding".
This guide gives you real rupee numbers for 2026, shows where a branding budget actually goes, explains how much to keep for ongoing brand and marketing work, and lists the hidden costs most budgets forget. We're a full-service agency in Bengaluru, so we'll also be transparent about our own pricing and where it fits.
What is a branding budget?
A branding budget is the money you set aside to define and build how your business is perceived: your positioning, name, visual identity, voice, guidelines and the core assets that carry them (website, packaging, decks, social templates). It has two parts:
A one-time brand build (or rebrand): strategy, identity system, guidelines and launch assets.
An ongoing brand budget: keeping the brand consistent and visible through content, social, campaigns and periodic refreshes.
Branding budget vs marketing budget
Factor | Branding budget | Marketing budget |
|---|---|---|
Main job | Make people recognise, remember and trust you | Make people act now (enquire, buy, sign up) |
Typical spend | Strategy, identity, guidelines, packaging, website design, brand content | Ads, promotions, lead generation, offers |
Time horizon | Builds over months and years | Measured in days and weeks |
How you measure it | Branded search, recall, direct traffic, pricing power, lower CAC over time | Leads, cost per lead, conversions, ROAS |
The two feed each other. Ads perform better when people already recognise the brand, and a brand nobody sees doesn't grow. That's why the split between them matters (more on that below).
How much should a startup spend on branding in India in 2026?
It depends far more on your stage and category than on a fixed formula. Here's how one-time branding budgets typically break down in India, based on what each scope includes:
Stage | Typical one-time branding budget | What it usually covers | Who usually does it |
|---|---|---|---|
Pre-revenue / bootstrapped | ₹50,000 – ₹2 lakh | Logo, colours, fonts, a basic brand sheet, social templates | Freelancer or small studio |
Funded seed / early-stage | ₹3 – 10 lakh | Research-led positioning, full identity system, brand guidebook, launch assets | Branding or full-service agency |
Series A+ / scaling or rebranding | ₹10 – 30 lakh+ | Deep strategy, naming or architecture, identity, packaging across SKUs, website redesign, rollout | Full-service agency or brand consultancy |
Two rules of thumb we share with founders:
Brand before you scale ads. If you're about to spend ₹2–5 lakh a month on performance marketing, a weak brand makes every rupee of that work harder.
Match the brand to the price you want to charge. A premium product with a template-looking brand gets pushed into discount territory.

Where does a branding budget actually go?
For a one-time brand identity project, this is a sensible allocation:
Area | Share of budget | What you get |
|---|---|---|
Research and strategy | 15–20% | Stakeholder interviews, customer and competitor research, positioning, brand promise |
Verbal identity | 10–15% | Messaging, tagline, tone of voice, naming if needed |
Visual identity system | 30–35% | Logo suite, colour, typography, graphic elements, imagery style |
Brand guidelines | 10% | Guidebook with usage rules, templates and examples |
Launch assets and rollout | 20–30% | Packaging, stationery, pitch deck, social kit, signage, website design |
Strategy looks like the smallest line, but it decides whether the other 80% works. Skipping it is one of the main reasons brands end up being redone.
Worked example: three real-world budget sizes
₹3 lakh (lean identity): about ₹50,000 on strategy, ₹35,000 on messaging, ₹1 lakh on the visual identity system, ₹30,000 on guidelines and ₹85,000 on launch assets such as a deck, social kit and stationery.
₹6–8 lakh (identity + website): the lean identity above plus a custom-designed marketing website (₹3–5 lakh), so the site is built from the brand, not around a logo.
₹15–25 lakh (rebrand at scale): deeper research, brand architecture across product lines, packaging for multiple SKUs, a website redesign and a rollout plan across stores, ads and sales collateral.
How much should you keep for ongoing brand and marketing?
The one-time build is only the start. The most-cited evidence on splitting ongoing spend comes from Les Binet and Peter Field's work for the IPA (The Long and the Short of It), which found that for consumer brands, around 60% brand-building and 40% sales activation tends to deliver the best long-term results. Their later report for the LinkedIn B2B Institute, The 5 Principles of Growth in B2B Marketing, puts the B2B balance at roughly 46% brand and 54% activation, and describes it as a rough guide rather than a precise target.
In practice, for an Indian startup that means:
D2C and consumer brands: lean towards brand content, social, creators and packaging, with performance ads capturing the demand that creates.
B2B and services: roughly half on visibility (LinkedIn presence, thought leadership, SEO, events) and half on lead generation (search ads, outbound, landing pages).
New launches and rebrands: temporarily brand-heavy, because nobody knows you yet.
For reference, Life Designer's social media, performance marketing (PPC) and SEO retainers each start at ₹80,000 a month (roughly US$1,000–5,000 a month for international clients, depending on scope), with ad budgets extra. So a brand running two channels with us should plan for about ₹1.6 lakh a month plus media spend.
What hidden costs do branding budgets forget?
GST: most Indian agencies quote exclusive of 18% GST.
Trademark filing: the official government fee for an e-filed trademark application is ₹4,500 per class for individuals, startups and small enterprises (₹9,000 for others), plus attorney fees if you use one. File before you print anything.
Font licences: premium typefaces often need desktop and web licences.
Photography and video: product, team and lifestyle shoots are rarely included in identity quotes.
Printing and production: packaging plates, signage fabrication and stationery runs.
Website running costs: platform plan, domain, hosting and maintenance.
Contingency: keep 10–15% aside for extra SKUs, translations or late stakeholder requests.

How to build your branding budget in 6 steps
Define the goal. New brand, refresh or full rebrand? Each needs a different scope.
Audit what you have. List every logo version, template, page and pack in use. Inconsistency is a cost you're already paying.
List the touchpoints that matter most. For D2C it's often packaging and Instagram; for B2B it's the website, deck and LinkedIn.
Separate one-time from ongoing. Put the brand build in one line and the monthly brand + marketing spend in another.
Get comparable quotes. Ask every agency for a line-item scope, revision rounds, platform, ownership of files and what happens after launch.
Phase it. Foundation first (strategy, identity, guidelines), then launch assets, then growth channels.
A simple template you can copy
Line item | One-time or monthly | Your budget (₹) |
|---|---|---|
Brand strategy and positioning | One-time | |
Visual and verbal identity | One-time | |
Brand guidelines | One-time | |
Packaging / website / launch assets | One-time | |
Trademark, fonts, photography | One-time | |
Social media and content | Monthly | |
Performance marketing (excl. ad spend) | Monthly | |
SEO | Monthly | |
Contingency (10–15%) | One-time |
Branding on a tight budget: what to fund first
If you can't do everything, do these in order:
Positioning. A clear answer to "who is this for and why us?" costs little and sharpens everything else.
A logo system that works small. It has to hold up as an app icon, a WhatsApp display picture and a label.
One hero touchpoint done properly. Packaging for D2C, the website for services, the deck for fundraising.
Basic guidelines. Even a two-page sheet stops the brand drifting.
What can wait: brand films, merchandise and large print campaigns.
Red flags in cheap branding quotes
No research or strategy phase, just "3 logo concepts".
Unlimited revisions with no defined direction stage (it usually means no direction).
You don't receive editable source files or vector logos.
No guidelines, so the next designer has to guess.
No mention of how the identity will work on digital, packaging and print together.
How Life Designer prices branding
Our brand identity projects start at ₹3 lakh and scale with the depth of strategy, the number of touchpoints, and packaging or rollout needs. Website design and development runs ₹3–10 lakh, and product UI/UX with app development runs ₹20–80 lakh depending on complexity and AI integration. Every project is scoped after a discovery call, so you see a line-item proposal before you commit.
A few examples of what different scopes look like in our portfolio:

Swiss Reise (electronics and travel accessories): brand strategy, logo and identity, packaging and guidelines for a brand selling across five product categories into European and Middle Eastern markets.
Vedic Roots (ayurvedic wellness): logo redesign, brand strategy, guidelines and packaging.
Sunzar (B2B solar marketplace): strategy, identity, guidebook and collaterals, followed by a responsive web app, so brand and product launched as one system.
Namma Bengaluru Aquarium (public attraction): identity, physical signage and a social media strategy.

Frequently asked questions
How much does branding cost for a startup in India?
Expect roughly ₹50,000–₹2 lakh with a freelancer for basic identity work, ₹3–10 lakh with an established agency for strategy-led branding, and ₹10–30 lakh or more for a full rebrand with packaging and a website. Life Designer's branding projects start at ₹3 lakh.
What percentage of revenue should go to branding and marketing?
Many growing businesses spend somewhere between 5% and 15% of revenue on brand and marketing combined, with new brands at the higher end while they build awareness. Within that, Binet and Field's research suggests about 60:40 brand-to-activation for consumer brands and about 46:54 for B2B.
Is branding a one-time cost?
The identity build is a one-time project, but the brand needs an ongoing budget for content, social, campaigns and periodic updates. Without it, consistency slips and the initial investment loses value.
Should I spend on branding or performance marketing first?
Build at least a solid foundation first: positioning, a working identity and one strong touchpoint. Ads sent to a weak brand or a poor landing page cost more per lead, so a modest brand investment usually makes the ad budget go further.
What's included in a branding package?
A full package typically includes research and positioning, messaging and tone of voice, a logo suite, colour and typography, graphic elements, brand guidelines and launch assets such as stationery, deck and social templates. Packaging and website design are often scoped separately.
How do I measure the ROI of branding?
Track branded search volume, direct website traffic, social engagement quality, conversion rates on ads and landing pages, average selling price and customer acquisition cost over 6–12 months. Branding shows up as everything else getting easier and cheaper.
The bottom line
A realistic branding budget in India starts with an honest view of your stage: lean and focused before revenue, strategy-led and complete once you're funded, and system-wide when you scale. Separate the one-time build from the ongoing spend, budget for the hidden costs, and keep enough behind the brand to actually show it to people.
