Is a no-code website cheaper than custom development? Three-year total cost of ownership with worked ₹ examples for marketing sites and early-stage products.

Is a No-Code Website Cheaper Than Custom Development? (2026) – cover image, Life Designer

Quick answer: For a marketing website, yes: in our worked example a no-code build costs about ₹6.3 lakh over three years versus about ₹12.3 lakh for a custom-coded site, mainly because your team can edit it without a developer. For a product with logins, payments and dashboards, the answer flips. No-code looks cheaper in year one, but if you outgrow it and rebuild, three-year costs can exceed building custom from the start. Compare total cost of ownership, not just the build quote.

Founders usually compare two quotes: one for a Framer or Webflow site, one for a custom build. The no-code quote is lower, so the decision looks made. Then the second and third years arrive with plan fees, plugin subscriptions, developer retainers and sometimes a full rebuild.

We've already written about how to decide between a custom and a no-code website based on what the site needs to do. This piece is only about money: what each route costs to build and run over one to three years, with worked rupee examples you can adapt to your own quotes.

What does "cheaper" actually mean for a website?

A website has three kinds of cost, and build price is only the first.

  • Build cost: design, development, content setup and launch.

  • Running cost: platform plans or hosting, domains, third-party tools and add-ons.

  • Change cost: every new landing page, pricing update, feature or fix over the site's life, plus who has to do it.

Total cost of ownership (TCO) is all three added up over the period you'll use the site. For an early-stage product, one to three years is the honest window, because that's roughly when most startups either outgrow their first build or settle into it.

What are the running costs of a no-code website?

No-code platforms bundle hosting, SSL, CDN and a CMS into a monthly plan. At the time of writing:

  • Framer lists its Basic site plan at $10 a month and Pro at $30 a month on yearly billing. Pro includes 10 CMS collections and 2,500 CMS items, with add-ons for more (for example, $20 per extra 10,000 CMS items).

  • Webflow lists paid site plans from $15 a month billed yearly, with CMS-capable plans priced higher.

To keep the maths simple, we've used ₹90 to the US dollar throughout. So Framer Pro is about ₹2,700 a month, or ₹32,400 a year, before taxes. Because these plans are billed in dollars, your rupee cost moves with the exchange rate.

Costs people forget on no-code

  • Add-ons for extra CMS items, locales or bandwidth.

  • Third-party tools for memberships, bookings, payments or automation, each with its own subscription.

  • Occasional design help for new templates or sections your team can't build themselves.

What are the running costs of a custom-coded website?

A custom site (for example Next.js or the MERN stack) has no platform fee, but it has other recurring lines:

  • Hosting and infrastructure: servers or a cloud platform, database, backups, monitoring.

  • A CMS: if marketers need to edit content, you add a headless CMS or build an admin panel.

  • Developer time: security updates, dependency upgrades, bug fixes, and most content or layout changes.

The developer line is usually the biggest. On a no-code site, a marketer can publish a campaign page in an afternoon. On a custom site, the same task usually goes into a developer's queue.

Worked example 1: a marketing website over 3 years

Scenario: a funded startup needs a 10–12 page marketing site with a blog, case studies and lead forms. No logins or payments. All figures are illustrative, chosen to show the method; plug in your own quotes.

Cost line

No-code (Framer)

3-year total

For a marketing site, no-code is roughly half the cost over three years in this example. The build is cheaper, but the bigger saving is change cost: your team isn't paying a developer for every new page.

This is the kind of project where we usually recommend no-code websites. For Life Resilience Training, we created the brand identity and a no-code website together, giving a service business a credible site it can own and update. For Ultrafast Chargers, we built a no-code site with custom motion graphics and on-page SEO.

Worked example 2: an early-stage product over 3 years

Scenario: the "website" is really a product. Users sign up, book, pay and see a dashboard; the team needs admin tools. There are three paths. Again, figures are illustrative.

Cost line

A: No-code + tools for 3 years

B: No-code first, rebuild custom after year 1

C: Custom from the start

Year 1 total

≈ ₹9.5 lakh

≈ ₹9.5 lakh

≈ ₹23.6 lakh

3-year total

≈ ₹18.6 lakh

≈ ₹36.7 lakh

≈ ₹30.8 lakh

Three things stand out:

  1. Path A is cheapest on paper, but only if the product never outgrows its tools. In practice, the "workarounds" line tends to grow as users and edge cases increase, and some features may never be possible.

  2. Path B is the most expensive because you pay for two builds. It still makes sense if you need to validate demand before committing ₹20 lakh, as long as you plan for the rebuild.

  3. Path C costs the most upfront but is cheaper than B over three years, and you own the code, which matters when investors ask about IP.

This is why we built Lakshya as a custom MERN web app from the start. It needed course discovery, enrolment, bookings, payments, automated confirmations, student dashboards and admin/CRM tools. It was delivered in 8 weeks, and the client reported 80% more bookings without calls. Forcing that onto a no-code stack would have meant a pile of tools to maintain.

When does no-code stop being cheaper?

Watch for these signals. Two or more usually mean custom will cost less over the next two to three years:

  • You're paying for three or more third-party tools to fake product features.

  • Your team spends hours each week on manual admin that software should do.

  • You're near CMS item limits and paying for add-ons.

  • You need user roles, complex permissions or real-time integrations with a CRM or ERP.

  • Investors or acquirers are asking who owns the code and data.

Is there a cheaper middle path?

For most startups, yes: split the marketing site from the product. Keep the marketing site on no-code so the growth team moves fast and cheaply, and build the product (app, portal or dashboard) in custom code on a subdomain such as app.yourbrand.com.

In TCO terms, you take the low-cost column from example 1 for the marketing site and the custom column from example 2 for the product, and avoid paying developers to edit marketing pages. It also means the marketing site doesn't need rebuilding when the product changes.

For full product build costs, including mobile apps, see our guide on the cost of custom web and mobile app development in India.

How does Life Designer price each route?

Our website design and development projects run ₹3–10 lakh, depending on pages, CMS, integrations and platform. Product UI/UX design and app development run ₹20–80 lakh depending on complexity and AI integration. Every project is scoped after a discovery call, and proposals are line-item, with GST extra.

When we scope a build, we'll show you the running and change costs alongside the build price, so you can compare routes over the life of the product rather than just the first invoice. See our website and app development services for more.

Frequently asked questions

Is a no-code website always cheaper to build?

Usually, for marketing sites, because platforms like Framer and Webflow include hosting, security and a CMS, and design can go straight to a live site. For products with logins, payments and business logic, no-code can look cheaper at first but become more expensive once you add tools, workarounds and a likely rebuild.

How much does a Framer or Webflow site cost to run each year?

At the time of writing, Framer lists site plans at $10 and $30 a month on yearly billing, and Webflow's paid site plans start at $15 a month billed yearly. At ₹90 to the dollar, Framer Pro is about ₹32,400 a year. Add your domain, any add-ons and third-party tools.

What are the hidden costs of custom website development?

The main ones are developer time for changes, security updates and dependency upgrades, plus hosting, monitoring, backups and a CMS if marketers need to edit content. Change cost is the one most founders underestimate, because every new page or edit goes through a developer.

Can I move from no-code to custom later without losing money?

You will pay for two builds, so it's rarely the cheapest route over three years. It's still sensible when you need to validate demand quickly. Reduce the waste by keeping research, design files and content reusable, and plan the rebuild as a known future cost.

Which is cheaper for an MVP?

If the MVP is mainly a landing page, waitlist or simple lead flow, no-code is cheaper and faster. If the MVP needs accounts, transactions and dashboards to prove value, building custom from the start is often cheaper over two to three years than building twice.

Do I need to add GST to website quotes in India?

Usually yes. Most Indian agencies quote exclusive of 18% GST. Platform subscriptions billed in US dollars are also affected by exchange rates, so check how both appear on your invoices when comparing routes. Ask every agency to state clearly whether its quote includes GST, platform fees and third-party tools.

The bottom line

A no-code website is cheaper than custom development for most early-stage marketing sites, by about half over three years in our worked example, mainly because your team can change it without developers. For a real product, the cheapest route is the one you won't have to rebuild. Do the three-year maths on every option before you choose.
